CEBU — The 19th East Asia Inter-Regional Tourism Federation (EATOF) General Assembly officially opened on September 2, 2026, at the Mactan Expo in Lapu-Lapu City. Governor Pamela S. Baricuatro led Cebu in welcoming governors, tourism officials, and stakeholders from across East and Southeast Asia to the three-day gathering.
A Vibrant Cebuano Welcome
The opening ceremony began with a distinctly Cebuano flourish. The renowned Tribu Basakanon brought the energy and rhythm of the Sinulog to the international stage. Their performance gave visiting delegates an unforgettable introduction to Cebu's most celebrated cultural tradition.
The vibrant display set the tone for an event centered on friendship and shared purpose. Governor Baricuatro emphasized the power of tourism as a force for economic opportunity and cultural understanding. Strengthening Regional Cooperation
The assembly brings together EATOF member regions from across the region. These include Gangwon State from South Korea, Tottori Prefecture from Japan, Töv Province from Mongolia, Sarawak from Malaysia, Quang Ninh from Vietnam, Luang Prabang from Laos, and Siem Reap from Cambodia. The gathering aims to deepen cooperation in tourism, culture, connectivity, investment, and sustainable development.
Governor Baricuatro noted that the assembly builds on Cebu's hosting of the Standing Committee Meeting last year. She stressed that cooperation among regions has become more critical as the tourism landscape evolves. The platform allows members to learn from one another and develop initiatives benefiting their communities.
A Platform for Meaningful Exchange
In her welcome message, the governor highlighted the challenges facing destinations today. These include climate change, environmental pressures, connectivity gaps, and rapid development. She emphasized that no region can build the future of tourism alone.

Gangwon State Vice Governor for Economic Affairs Shin Weon-Chul addressed the assembly, congratulating Cebu for hosting the 2026 gathering. Gangwon State has served as EATOF's chair and secretariat since the federation's founding in 2000. The vice governor expressed appreciation for Cebu's warm welcome.
Vice Governor Glenn Soco also welcomed the international delegates. He emphasized Cebu's strategic position with its international airport and seaport. The assembly provides an opportunity to build linkages with regional economies. It is a venue for exploring partnerships that will drive sustainable tourism growth across East Asia.
