CEBU — Provincial Government officials are currently in Japan for the Asia-Pacific Circular Cities Forum 2026. The delegation is presenting Cebu's ambitious plan to establish a Green Transformation Park, an integrated waste management facility designed to address the province's growing environmental challenges.
A Bold Step for Waste Management
The GX Park represents a fundamental shift in how Cebu approaches waste. It will combine various waste management solutions in one location, adhering to the core principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle. The facility will process both commercial and municipal waste, supporting sustainable growth.
Speaking at the forum, Elizar L. Sabinay Jr. of the Cebu Provincial Planning and Development Office outlined the project timeline. A feasibility study will officially launch on September 11, 2026. This crucial study is spearheaded by GUUN, a Yokohama-based company with expertise in circular economy solutions.
Strategic Placement Across the Island
The initiative calls for the GX Park to be built in three strategic areas. These locations are Danao City in the north, Cebu City in the central region, and one LGU in the south. This island-wide approach creates a unified waste management network.
The delegation in Japan includes key provincial leaders. Representative Shun J. Shimura and several Provincial Board Members are present. Atty. Kevin Dominic G. Dinsay is representing Governor Pamela S. Baricuatro at the international gathering.
International Collaboration and Expertise
The project benefits significantly from international partnership. Funding and technical support come from Japan's Ministry of Environment. Additional expertise is provided by GUUN and Y-Bridge, ensuring world-class standards are met.
The Asia-Pacific Circular Cities Forum, which ran from September 3 to 4, provided a platform for learning and exchange. The Cebu delegation also participated in an excursion to observe Yokohama's successful tourism and sustainability assets. This exposure provides valuable insights for Cebu's own green transformation.
