DAANBANTAYAN, Cebu — Mayor Gilbert M. Arrabis Jr. led the groundbreaking ceremony for a 110-kilowatt solar power system integrated with a multi-purpose building on September 18, 2026. The facility rises at the MENRO Residual Containment Area in Barangay Pajo, marking a significant step toward sustainable waste management.
A Solar-Powered Waste Management Hub
The project includes a mounting structure and production area designed to support the municipality's solid waste operations. The solar power system will supply clean energy to the facility, reducing reliance on conventional electricity. This integration reflects a forward-thinking approach to environmental infrastructure.
Mayor Arrabis expressed appreciation to MENRO Head Mamerto Rodrigo and staff for their continuing efforts to strengthen solid waste management. He also acknowledged the Sangguniang Bayan, led by Vice Mayor Elver Ali Abucay, for supporting the initiative. Their collective commitment made the project possible.
Partnership with PEMSEA and Korea
The solar power system forms part of requirements under the municipality's partnership with Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia. PEMSEA will provide a complete system of machinery designed to manage and process approximately 80 percent of plastic residuals.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea also extended partnership and assistance for the project. This international collaboration brings technical expertise and resources to Daanbantayan's waste management efforts. The partnership demonstrates how global cooperation can address local environmental challenges.
Reducing Waste Through Technology
The machinery from PEMSEA will help reduce the volume of waste for final disposal by processing plastic residuals. This intervention directly addresses one of the municipality's most pressing environmental concerns. Present during the ceremony were SB Member and Committee on Environment and Natural Resources Chairperson Jupiter Roy Rosell, SB Member Wendell Rosell, and Municipal Engineering Office OIC Engr. Shyla Mediado. Representatives from contractor GC Tech and Barangay Pajo officials also attended.
