DAVAO — Davao City has climbed 49 places to rank 470th among the world's 1,000 largest cities in the Oxford Economics 2026 Global Cities Index. The city also moved from fifth to third among Philippine cities, surpassing Cebu.
A Significant Leap in Global Standing
The latest ranking represents a major improvement from 2025, when Davao placed 519th globally and fifth nationally. The city now trails only Manila, which ranked 174th, and Angeles City at 388th. Cebu City followed closely at 474th, just four places behind Davao.
Oxford Economics is a leading independent economic advisory firm. Its Global Cities Index assesses cities across five dimensions: economics, human capital, quality of life, environment, and governance. The index covers the world's 1,000 largest cities, providing a holistic assessment of their strengths and future potential.
Environment Emerges as Davao's Strongest Category
Davao's strongest showing came in environment, where it ranked 299th globally with a category score of 71.6. This significantly outpaced its rankings in other areas and reflects the city government's consistent thrust toward inclusive development focused on environmental protection.
The city posted an overall score of 42.6. Its other category scores include 41.3 for economics, 40.1 for human capital, 48.3 for quality of life, and 52.9 for governance. These figures show that Davao's position reflects a combination of strengths rather than dominance in any single measure.
How Davao Compares with Other Philippine Cities
The 2026 index placed Manila first among Philippine cities at No. 174 globally. Angeles City ranked second at No. 388, followed by Davao at No. 470. Cebu City came in fourth at No. 474, while Bacolod placed fifth at No. 504.
Other Philippine cities in the index include Cagayan de Oro at No. 530, Dagupan at No. 620, General Santos at No. 818, and Zamboanga City at No. 823. The rankings demonstrate the competitive standing of Philippine urban centers on the global stage.
Recognized as an Emerging Standout
Oxford Economics classified Davao among "Emerging Standouts," a group of developing-world cities outperforming their respective countries. These cities attract residents through faster productivity growth and higher income levels. Davao is explicitly listed as an example of this classification.
The recognition places Davao in the context of a broader shift in global urban growth toward Asia. Oxford Economics projects that Chinese and Indian cities will drive future growth, with their combined GDP share exceeding Europe's by 2050.
