DAVAO CITY — Davao Saba bananas have officially entered the Hong Kong market following a trade agreement forged during the Asia Fruit Logistica Hong Kong 2026. The initial shipment marks a significant milestone for local banana producers seeking global market access.
A Historic First Shipment
Gerb Golden Hands Corp., based in Tibal-og, Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte, shipped its first batch of 200 boxes of Saba bananas on October 13, 2026. Each box contains 12 kilograms of bananas, bringing the initial shipment to 2.4 metric tons. This consignment represents the culmination of months of negotiation and market linkage efforts.
An additional 250 boxes are scheduled for shipment on October 14, bringing the total volume to 450 boxes or 5.4 metric tons. The steady expansion of shipments demonstrates growing confidence in the quality and competitiveness of Davao-grown Saba bananas. It also signals the beginning of a sustainable trade relationship with Hong Kong buyers.
A Promising Step for Local Farmers
Agriculture Regional Technical Director for Operations Marie Ann Constantino described the shipment as a promising step toward opening more international market opportunities for local banana producers. She emphasized that the development strengthens livelihood prospects for farming communities across the Davao Region.
"The DA-11 will continue to support our bananeros by strengthening market linkages, facilitating trade opportunities, and connecting our local producers to global buyers," Constantino said. Her statement underscores the department's commitment to ensuring that Davao Region agricultural products gain greater recognition and competitiveness in the international market.
Leveraging International Trade Platforms
The initial shipment demonstrates the tangible progress of market linkages established during AFL Hong Kong 2026. At that event, Philippine agricultural exporters connected with international buyers to expand the reach of local produce in overseas markets. The trade agreement that followed has now translated into real export activity.
By participating in international trade fairs, local producers gain exposure to global market trends, buyer preferences, and pricing dynamics. These platforms also provide opportunities to forge partnerships that can lead to long-term supply arrangements. The Davao Saba banana shipment exemplifies how such engagements can yield concrete results.
Strengthening the Banana Industry
The Saba banana, also known as Cardava, is a staple crop in the Davao Region. It is widely used in Filipino cuisine, from boiled snacks to popular dishes like saba con hielo. Its natural sweetness and versatile texture make it an attractive product for international markets, particularly in Asian countries where similar varieties are appreciated.
Expanding exports provides farmers with better income opportunities and encourages increased production. It also motivates investment in post-harvest facilities, packaging improvements, and quality control measures. These developments contribute to the overall modernization of the local banana industry.
Future Prospects for Davao Agriculture
The successful shipment to Hong Kong could pave the way for more Davao agricultural products to enter international markets. Bananas, durian, cacao, and coffee are among the region's flagship commodities with export potential. The Department of Agriculture continues to facilitate trade missions and market matching activities.
For farming communities in Sto. Tomas and neighboring municipalities, the Hong Kong shipment represents hope for a brighter future. It shows that their hard work and dedication to quality can reach consumers beyond Philippine shores. As more shipments follow, the Davao Region solidifies its reputation as a reliable source of premium agricultural products.
