Cagayan De Oro — Cagayan de Oro is widely celebrated today as the vibrant, modern City of Golden Friendship, but its historical roots run even deeper than many realize. Long before it adopted its famous contemporary name, the bustling metropolis was officially known as Cagayan de Misamis. Tracing this fascinating name change reveals a rich story of Spanish-era provincial heritage, post-war rebirth, and the proud evolution of one of Mindanao's most dynamic urban centers.

Roots As The Capital Of Misamis

During the Spanish colonial period, the region underwent significant administrative changes that shaped its early identity. In the 19th century, when Misamis gained official status as a province, the settlement along the mighty Cagayan River was designated as the permanent capital of the Segundo Distrito de Misamis. At that time, local residents and Spanish authorities officially referred to the thriving town as Cagayan de Misamis. This historical designation established the area as a crucial political, trading, and cultural hub in Northern Mindanao.

The Post-War Birth Of Cagayan De Oro

The turning point for the city's name came right after World War II, a period when local leaders worked tirelessly to rebuild the war-damaged municipality. Through the legislative efforts of local lawmakers, including Congressman Emmanuel Peláez, a historic bill was introduced to grant the town official city status. On June 15, 1950, President Elpidio Quirino signed Republic Act No. 521, officially transforming the municipality into a chartered city. Along with this charter came the addition of "de Oro"—meaning "of gold"—to honor the region's rich mining heritage and sparkling future.

Celebrating A Rich Historical Legacy

Looking back at the days of Cagayan de Misamis gives modern Kagay-anons a wonderful appreciation for how far their beloved city has come. From an ancient river settlement and a colonial capital to the booming, progressive metropolis it is today, the city's history is a testament to resilience and growth. Remembering this remarkable past adds an extra layer of pride for everyone who calls the City of Golden Friendship their home.
