DAVAO — The City Government of Digos, through its City Greening Program, conducted a mangrove planting activity at Punta Biao in Barangay Cogon on October 10, 2026. The initiative brought together local officials, volunteers, and partner agencies to protect coastlines and promote a greener, more sustainable city.
A United Effort for the Coastline
City Vice-Mayor Johari Bana joined Punong Barangay Danilo Sato in leading the activity. They were supported by the CDRRMO Medical Team Responders, the City Cooperative Office, and personnel from various city government offices. Partner agencies, volunteers, and community stakeholders also participated in the planting.
The turnout reflected a shared commitment to environmental conservation. City Mayor Josef Fortich Cagas and City Councilor Liza Maravillas Cagas extended their continued support for the program. Organizers expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the initiative's success.
Dentists Join the Cause
A separate planting activity held on October 9 drew participation from the Dentists of Digos City, Davao del Sur. Fifteen volunteers planted 50 mangrove seedlings as part of the same City Greening Program. Their involvement demonstrated that environmental stewardship extends across all professions.
This meaningful undertaking highlighted the importance of community participation in protecting coastal ecosystems. Mangroves serve as natural barriers against coastal erosion, provide habitats for marine wildlife, and help sustain biodiversity. Each seedling represents a long-term investment in the environment.
Mangroves as Natural Defenses
Mangroves play a critical role in shielding coastal communities from storm surges and rising sea levels. Their dense root systems stabilize shorelines and prevent soil erosion. They also filter pollutants from water, improving overall marine health.
These coastal forests serve as nurseries for fish and other marine species. Many commercially important seafood populations depend on mangrove habitats during their early life stages. Protecting mangroves therefore supports both biodiversity and local livelihoods.
Every Saturday Is Arbor Day
The City Greening Program operates under the banner "Every Saturday is Service Day, Every Saturday is Arbor Day." This regular schedule ensures sustained environmental action throughout the year. It transforms conservation from occasional events into a consistent community practice.
Regular planting activities build momentum and public awareness. Residents become familiar with the program and look forward to participating. Over time, this consistency creates a culture of environmental responsibility that outlasts individual events.
A Greener, More Sustainable Digos
The mangrove planting initiative forms part of Digos City's broader environmental agenda. By protecting its coastlines, the city safeguards both natural ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. The program reflects a forward-looking approach to urban development.
Organizers encourage more residents, organizations, and businesses to join future activities. Together, stakeholders can ensure that Digos remains resilient against climate challenges. The city's coastlines will continue to thrive for generations to come.
