New Museum Opens on Philippine Independence Day
The Filipino American Museum of Las Vegas officially opened its doors on June 12, celebrating Philippine Independence Day with the launch of a new cultural landmark dedicated to preserving and promoting Filipino heritage in Southern Nevada.
Located at Suite 320, El Mercado at the Boulevard Mall in Las Vegas' Filipino Town district, the museum welcomed community leaders, supporters, and residents during its grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony. The new museum reflects years of work led by Rozita Villanueva Lee, founder and president of the Filipino American Museum, who has long supported Filipino American culture and community development.
Honoring the Filipino Community in Nevada
The museum is situated within the 1.5-mile Filipino Town corridor along Maryland Parkway, a cultural district established to recognize the contributions of Nevada's more than 250,000 Filipinos, the state's largest Asian ethnic community.
Surrounded by popular Filipino-owned businesses and restaurants such as Seafood City, Jollibee, and Chowking, the museum serves as a new gathering place where visitors can learn about Filipino history, traditions, and achievements.
During the opening ceremony, Lee encouraged Filipinos to take pride in their heritage and said the museum provides a place where the community can be recognized and celebrated.
Museum Showcases Filipino History and Indigenous Culture
One of the museum's first featured exhibits is "Ifugao: People of the Cordilleras," which highlights artifacts from the Therese Hermosisima Finnegan Collection. The exhibit features traditional Ifugao items such as bulols (rice guardian figures), woven textiles, baskets, ritual objects, tools, and tribal accessories that showcase the rich culture of one of the Philippines' most well-known indigenous communities.
The collection offers visitors a closer look at the traditions, craftsmanship, and daily life of the Ifugao people, whose heritage is closely connected to the world-famous Rice Terraces of the Philippines.
Museum officials also announced plans for future rotating exhibits that will focus on Filipino art, migration stories, indigenous traditions, history, and the experiences of Filipinos around the world.
Educational Programs Planned for All Ages
Beyond its exhibits, the Filipino American Museum plans to offer educational and cultural programs for children and adults. Future activities will include workshops on traditional crafts, music, dance, Filipino cuisine, storytelling, and lectures about Philippine history and identity.
The museum hopes these programs will help strengthen cultural awareness while connecting younger generations with their Filipino roots.
Visiting the Filipino American Museum
The Filipino American Museum is open Fridays through Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. General admission is USD 10, while students and seniors can enter for USD 5. Children under the age of 12 receive free admission.
With its exhibits, educational programs, and community events, the Filipino American Museum aims to become an important cultural center that celebrates the history, resilience, and lasting contributions of Filipino Americans in Southern Nevada.
