ZAMBOANGA CITY — The country’s first dedicated overseas Filipino workers (OFW) ward in Region IX officially opened at the Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC) on July 21, 2026. The five‑bed facility promises faster, more dignified medical care for modern‑day heroes across the Zamboanga Peninsula and the island provinces of Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi‑Tawi.
A Haven for Returning Heroes
The new ward sits on the fifth floor of ZCMC Tower 1, a quiet space equipped with air‑conditioned rooms designed for rest and recovery. It was born out of the urgent need to provide immediate hospitalization for OFWs who often faced long, painful waits in crowded emergency rooms. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) recognized that workers returning with injuries or illnesses deserved a dedicated path to healing.
DMW Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac led the inauguration and called the ward a concrete expression of the government’s commitment to protect and empower migrant workers. He stressed that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s vision is clear: every Filipino worker must have access to essential services at every stage of the migration journey. The ward ensures that those who sacrificed years abroad are not left waiting when they need help the most.
Fast-Tracking Care and Compassion
Beyond hospital beds, the facility integrates a comprehensive support system. Patients admitted through referrals from DMW, OWWA, or DOH will receive not only medical treatment but also welfare assistance, case management, and reintegration support. This means a worker recovering from surgery can also receive guidance on livelihood programs and psychosocial services during their stay.
The partnership behind the ward is a model of inter‑agency cooperation. The DMW Regional Office IX, ZCMC, the Department of Health’s Zamboanga Peninsula Center for Health Development, and the OWWA Regional Welfare Office IX all pooled their resources to make it happen. By repurposing existing hospital space, they created a facility that solves immediate healthcare access gaps without waiting for new construction, a practical approach that can be replicated elsewhere.
Zamboanga City Mayor Khymer Olaso, himself a former OFW, attended the opening and underscored the personal significance of the project. He knows firsthand the vulnerability that overseas workers feel when they fall ill far from home.
