Expanding Renewable Energy for Eastern Visayas

LEYTE - First Gen Corporation has expressed its readiness to supply more renewable electricity to Leyte and neighboring provinces in Eastern Visayas through its Tongonan Geothermal Power Plant. Operated by its renewable energy subsidiary, Energy Development Corporation (EDC), the facility has available geothermal capacity that can be offered through future competitive bidding or emergency power procurement once procurement terms become more suitable for renewable energy providers. The company emphasized that it remains committed to supporting the region's increasing demand for electricity while promoting sustainable energy solutions. This commitment reinforces the important role of geothermal energy in ensuring a reliable and environmentally responsible power supply for Eastern Visayas.

Reliable and Affordable Clean Energy

According to First Gen, geothermal power plants operate differently from conventional power facilities because they require continuous investment in steam field development and well maintenance to sustain dependable 24-hour electricity generation. Despite these operational differences, the company highlighted its long-standing partnership with Leyte II Electric Cooperative (LEYECO II) and Leyte III Electric Cooperative (LEYECO III), which has provided consumers with stable and predictable electricity rates for more than 15 years. First Gen is now exploring opportunities to extend these benefits to more electric cooperatives and communities throughout the region. By expanding access to geothermal energy, the company hopes to contribute to more affordable and dependable electricity for households, businesses, and industries.

Supporting Long-Term Energy Security

First Gen reaffirmed its willingness to work closely with electric cooperatives, local stakeholders, and government agencies to develop procurement solutions that recognize the operational requirements of renewable energy facilities. As the country's leading renewable energy provider, the company operates more than 1,700 megawatts of installed capacity from geothermal, hydro, wind, and solar energy sources, with over 1,300 megawatts generated by geothermal plants. These facilities have helped establish the Philippines as one of the world's leading producers of geothermal energy while supporting national energy security. With continued collaboration and forward-looking energy policies, First Gen aims to help Eastern Visayas achieve a cleaner, more reliable, and sustainable energy future that benefits consumers and local communities alike.
