DAVAO — More than 400 visual artists from across Mindanao are showcasing the diversity and vitality of contemporary art as Mindanao Art 2026 opened at SM Lanang. The exhibition runs from September 20 to October 1, 2026, drawing art enthusiasts, collectors, and tourists.
A Milestone for Mindanaoan Unity
For the first time, all regions of Mindanao are represented, including an organization from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. Kublai Millan, president of Lawig-Diwa Inc., described the participation as a significant step toward uniting the island's diverse communities through art.
The annual event has become a venue for artists to sell their masterpieces and connect with the community. Millan noted that sales have consistently grown each year, reflecting the public's appreciation for local talent. He said the fair has inspired artists to dream bigger and aim for greater commercial success.
Moonphase: An Installation of Transformation
This year's installation, Moonphase, invites visitors to experience the interplay of shadow and glow at the North Wing Grounds. Inspired by the theme "The changing cycle of darkness and light," the outdoor artwork captures the quiet beauty of transformation.
The installation serves as a visual metaphor for the exhibition itself. It reflects the resilience of Mindanao's artists who continue to create despite challenges. Visitors can experience Moonphase at SM Lanang until October 1.
Art as an Ambassador of Culture
Millan advised young artists to draw inspiration from real people and culture. He described artists as ambassadors of culture who share stories through their works. The challenge, he said, is that many artists need support, making platforms like Mindanao Art essential.
The opening video message acknowledged the difficulties facing Mindanao, including earthquakes, floods, and conflicts. Yet it also spoke of hope and the cycle of darkness and light. The message reminded artists to continue creating beauty even in the deepest night.

Mindanao Art continues to grow in scope and influence. The inclusion of BARMM artists marks a historic step toward inclusivity. Millan expressed hope that the platform will help artists earn more and gain broader recognition. He urged them to remain rooted in Mindanao's rich cultural heritage.
