From Domestic Work to a New Career Path
BOHOL - For Syra Anil, working overseas began as a difficult but necessary decision despite having completed a Criminology degree in Tagbilaran. The 28-year-old resident of Barangay Tangkigan in Mabini, Bohol previously worked as a domestic helper in Saudi Arabia under a two-year contract. Her experience involved long working hours, beginning as early as 4 a.m. and often ending only after the eight members of the household she served had gone to sleep. Despite the challenges of domestic work abroad, Anil remains determined to return overseas because of her responsibility to help provide for her family. This time, however, she hopes to pursue a different career. She is considering training as a caregiver, believing that acquiring additional skills could give her access to better employment opportunities and potentially higher income.
Reintegration Program Opens New Opportunities
Anil shared her plans while attending the OWWA Siete Reintegration Caravan held in Mabini, Bohol, on August 20. The activity brought together more than 500 overseas Filipino workers and returning OFWs, providing them with access to government agencies, private companies, employment opportunities, livelihood assistance, and other reintegration services. The caravan was organized by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) through the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) to help OFWs who have lost employment or returned home because of economic difficulties and conflicts affecting overseas destinations. Beyond helping displaced workers find new sources of income, the program also brings various agencies together so OFWs can process documents, seek assistance, and learn about available employment and livelihood programs in one venue.
Upskilling Seen as a Stepping Stone to Better Work
During the event, Mabini Mayor Ongie Grace Lim encouraged participating OFWs to explore the services offered by the government agencies and private organizations present at the caravan. She also urged returning workers to take advantage of available upskilling opportunities that could equip them with qualifications for jobs offering better compensation. For Anil, the opportunity to gain new skills represents a chance to improve her circumstances while continuing her goal of working abroad. Although she recognizes that leaving home again will not be easy, her experience as a domestic helper has strengthened her determination to pursue a more sustainable career. By shifting from household work to caregiving, she hopes her next overseas employment will provide better opportunities and allow her to continue supporting her family.
