Davao — The Paquibato District witnessed a historic transformation on July 1, 2026, as 100 pioneering students from the University of Southeastern Philippines–Malabog Extension Campus (USeP–MEC) officially received their college degrees. For many of these graduates, who hail from the city’s geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs), the climb to a diploma was literally and metaphorically steep, overcoming both financial hardships and the legacy of regional conflict. This first-ever commencement exercise not only celebrated the academic success of the inaugural batch but also marked the fruition of a vital partnership between the City Government of Davao and USeP to bring quality, free tertiary education directly to the heart of the community.
Empowering a New Generation of Leaders
The graduating class—comprising 57 students of the Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship and 43 students of the Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness—is uniquely equipped to drive economic growth in their home district. Among the pioneers, 16 graduates represent local Indigenous Peoples communities, while an impressive 79 are first-generation college students, shattering systemic barriers that previously limited access to higher learning in the area. During the ceremony, the graduates were celebrated for their resilience, with eight students earning Latin honors, proving that geographic isolation is no match for academic excellence and community support. The curriculum itself was specifically tailored to the needs of Paquibato, ensuring that graduates possess the practical skills necessary to strengthen local enterprises and champion sustainable development.
A Testament to Resilient Partnerships
The establishment of the Malabog Extension Campus in 2022 was born from a vision to foster peace and development in conflict-affected regions, a mission that has been steadfastly upheld by the leadership of Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte. During the commencement, representatives of the city government highlighted that this milestone belongs to the entire community, which refused to abandon its youth despite the historical challenges of the district. The event was bolstered by messages of support from national and local leaders, including a special recorded tribute from Vice President Sara Duterte, reinforcing the message that education is the ultimate tool for social transformation. As these 100 graduates step into their professional lives, they carry with them the responsibility to uplift their peers, serving as living proof that with the right investment in human capital, even the most remote areas can become hubs of innovation and excellence.
