TACLOBAN CITY — Reaffirming the region’s growing status as a prime hub for international expedition tourism, the Department of Tourism-Eastern Visayas (DOT-8) has officially confirmed that three luxury cruise ships are scheduled to anchor across various island destinations in the region in 2027. Bringing over 600 international passengers, the confirmed port calls reflect an increasing global appetite for culturally immersive, eco-driven shore excursions in the Philippines' eastern seaboard.
Unveiling the 2027 Expedition Itinerary
According to DOT-8, the incoming international liners represent premier boutique cruise operators known for high-end, off-the-beaten-path voyages:
Swan Hellenic Cruises (UK): Scheduled for May 2027, the UK-based expedition vessel will usher in 160 passengers to the picturesque Cuatro Islas in Leyte.
Heritage Adventurer (Portugal): Arriving in June 2027, the Portuguese-flagged ship will dock along key eco-tourism sites in Calbayog City and the eco-adventure hub of Paranas, Samar.
Compagnie du Ponant (France): In September 2027, the French luxury operator will carry 280 passengers to historical Limasawa Island in Southern Leyte and Leyte's Cuatro Islas.
Driving Sustainable Growth in Island Communities
Tourism officials highlight that expedition-style cruise calls generate vital economic opportunities for small island municipalities where conventional tourism infrastructure—such as large hotel chains and commercial dining—remains sparse. By focusing on localized cultural exchanges, authentic coastal experiences, and protected marine ecosystems, the cruise visits directly benefit local tour guides, boat operators, and community-based artisans without overcrowding pristine ecosystems.

To prepare local communities for international arrivals, DOT-8, alongside private destination management firms and municipal local government units (LGUs), recently completed comprehensive readiness assessments across multiple island destinations. Sites in Samar, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, and Biliran were surveyed to gauge environmental safety, port access, and tour capacity.
