Strengthening Bohol’s Agricultural Development
BOHOL - The Provincial Government of Bohol is pursuing agricultural investments and partnerships to improve farmers’ livelihoods, increase local food production, and create more economic opportunities in rural communities. During a meeting on October 9, 2026, provincial officials and representatives of the Department of Agriculture discussed potential initiatives involving coffee and ubi production, farm-to-market roads, and agricultural infrastructure. These efforts aim to address important needs across the agricultural sector, including access to production resources, improved farm connectivity, and opportunities for farmers to expand their operations. By strengthening cooperation between the provincial government and national agriculture agencies, Bohol seeks to develop a more productive and resilient agricultural industry.
Developing Coffee Production and Ubi Community Nurseries
Coffee and ubi development emerged as key priorities in the discussions. Bohol’s potential for growing liberica coffee was highlighted following a tasting of locally produced coffee from an estate in Mabini. Building on existing coffee production in Mabini, the proposed coffee corridor will explore expansion into Ubay and Alicia, with trial planting being considered for Carlos P. Garcia Island. The province is also looking at developing approximately 300 hectares for coffee production, potentially creating additional livelihood opportunities for farmers and supporting local agricultural enterprises. For ubi, proposed community plant nurseries are intended to provide farmer groups with quality planting materials, encourage proper nursery management, and conserve the province’s diverse ubi varieties. These initiatives could help improve crop quality, support more consistent production, and strengthen the value of locally grown agricultural products.
Creating Sustainable Livelihoods Through Agricultural Investment
Beyond crop development, improved farm-to-market roads and agricultural infrastructure can help farmers transport their harvests more efficiently, connect with buyers, and reduce challenges associated with bringing products to market. Combining infrastructure improvements with access to planting materials, technical guidance, and stronger institutional partnerships can support agricultural productivity and rural enterprise development. These initiatives form part of Bohol’s broader Strategic Governance Roadmap 2028, which seeks to expand livelihood opportunities and strengthen the province’s economic foundations. By investing in coffee, ubi, and essential agricultural support systems, Bohol aims to create more sustainable opportunities for farming communities while contributing to local food security and long-term rural development.
