PHILIPPINES — The Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Amateur Baseball Association inspected the ongoing rehabilitation of the historic Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium on August 13, 2026. The project remains on schedule for an October finish, just weeks before the East Asia Baseball Cup arrives in November.

A Historic Venue Restored

The inspection was led by PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio, alongside PABA Secretary-General Mike Asuncion and PSC Executive Director Atty. Guillermo Iroy. They walked through the construction site to assess progress and ensure that the upgrades meet international standards. The team expressed confidence that the venue will be ready to welcome teams and fans on time.

The stadium first opened in 1934 and carries deep baseball heritage. It is famous for hosting American legends Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig during a historic exhibition game in December of that year. Gehrig hit the first home run in the stadium, while Ruth followed with the second, creating memories that still define the venue.

Modern Upgrades with Heritage Intact

The rehabilitation aims to transform the facility into a world-class baseball arena without erasing its past. Workers are installing an all-weather artificial turf that meets international standards, replacing the old natural grass. A high-resolution digital LED scoreboard will be mounted on the outfield wall for better fan engagement.

The grandstand is being expanded to accommodate up to 10,000 spectators, with new roofing, railings, and protective netting. Team dugouts and lighting systems are also being modernized. Importantly, the iconic Wall of Fame will be retained as a central feature, preserving the stadium’s connection to its legendary past.

Countdown to East Asia Baseball Cup

The tight deadline is tied to the East Asia Baseball Cup, scheduled from November 24 to December 6, 2026, at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium. The Philippines enters the tournament as defending champions, having claimed multiple regional titles in recent years. Hosting the event in a newly upgraded venue is a point of national pride.

PSC officials emphasized that the facility work is being carried out with a sense of urgency. The goal is to finish the facelift in time for teams to practice and compete at a world-class level. The international tournament will test not only the players but also the country’s ability to host major baseball events.

Building the Future of PH Baseball

Beyond the stadium, the government and baseball leaders are investing in grassroots development. Plans are underway to build new baseball fields across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao to discover young talent. Equipment donations and training programs are also being rolled out to support the next generation of players.

The Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium upgrade is part of a larger push to modernize Philippine sports infrastructure. By preserving heritage while adding modern amenities, the project shows that tradition and progress can go hand in hand. The East Asia Baseball Cup will be a showcase of that vision.
