DAVAO — A massage therapist who survived the 2016 Roxas Night Market bombing has led her group to national recognition, proving that resilience can transform tragedy into triumph. The Samahan Masahista ng Malita was named First Runner-Up at the 2026 National Kabuhayan Awards.
A Survivor's Journey to National Recognition
Mercy Bancil established SAMAMA in Malita, Davao Occidental after relocating from Davao City following the deadly bombing. The group is composed of TESDA NC-II certified massage therapists who provide therapy services while creating income opportunities for their community. Their journey from local beneficiaries to national contenders reflects years of dedication.
The group received a plaque of recognition and an P80,000 cash prize during ceremonies held on October 6, 2026, at the Dusit Thani Grand Ballroom. Bancil said the winnings would serve as additional capital for their association. "Pandagdag puhunan sa aming asosasyon," she said.
Second Place on the National Stage
SAMAMA secured the First Runner-Up spot in the Best DOLE-Assisted Livelihood Project group category, finishing behind Natalged A Lasam Cacao Sustainable Agriculture Cooperative from Region 2. The national winner received P100,000 for their Cacao Production, Processing, and Selling Project.
The annual awards program honors individuals and organizations demonstrating exemplary contributions to the Department of Labor and Employment's Integrated Livelihood Program. It also recognizes outstanding DOLE focal persons and regional offices implementing the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers program.
From Tragedy to Triumph
Bancil's story began with unimaginable loss. "Bomb victim survivor po ako nung Roxas Night Market bombing, after nun bumuo ako ng grupo doon sa Malita," she recalled. Rather than allowing trauma to define her future, she channeled her energy into building something meaningful for her new community.
Their group became a recipient of the DOLE Integrated Livelihood Project for their Massage Services Project. On September 29, they were chosen as the regional winner representing Davao Region. That victory propelled them to the national stage where they competed against the country's best livelihood projects.
A Win for Community Livelihood
DOLE Secretary Francis N. Tolentino personally handed the awards and paid tribute to the perseverance of all honorees. "The government provided livelihood, capital, and opportunity," he said. "But government cannot manufacture perseverance, or distribute determination. This comes from the Filipino people themselves."
The DOLE Davao Occidental office congratulated SAMAMA, describing the recognition as a testament to dedication, hard work, and resilience. From January to August 2026, the DILP assisted 41,449 beneficiaries through various livelihood interventions nationwide. SAMAMA's success demonstrates how local initiatives can achieve excellence and inspire others.
