ALEGRIA, Cebu — Cebu Normal University (CNU) formally inaugurated its Alegria Campus on August 28, 2026, marking a historic milestone for education in southwestern Cebu. The ceremony brought together government officials, university leaders, and community members to celebrate a new chapter of accessible quality education.
A Historic Day of Celebration
The inauguration began with a motorcade symbolizing CNU's arrival in Alegria and its commitment to serving the community. A Holy Mass followed, offering thanksgiving for the new campus and its mission. Rev. Fr. Froilan M. Bejoc served as the main celebrant, setting a solemn and grateful tone.
Governor Pamela Baricuatro served as the special guest and speaker, emphasizing the province's support for education. She was joined by Alegria Mayor Gilberto Magallon, Vice Mayor Verna Magallon, and Provincial Board Member Paz Rozgoni. Former congressman Peter Calderon of Cebu's 7th District also attended the ceremony.
A Campus for Every Learner
The campus carries the theme, "CNU-Alegria: A New Beginning, Bringing the Crimson and Gold of Quality Education Closer to Every Learner." The message reflects the university's commitment to expanding access beyond its main campus. Students from Alegria and neighboring towns now have a quality option closer to home.
CNU President Dr. Laurence L. Garcia led the university delegation, alongside Campus Director Dr. Alex Y. Tiempo and Campus Dean Dr. Erwin F. Corales. Former CNU President Dr. Daniel A. Ariaso was also present, witnessing the fulfillment of a long-held vision. The gathering highlighted the collaboration that made the campus possible.
Academic Year Begins with Purpose
Classes officially began on August 18, 2026, with a flag-raising ceremony led by campus officials and faculty. Students were welcomed as "Alegrianhong Normalites," a term reflecting their new identity within the CNU system. The campus looks forward to nurturing students who excel academically and serve with compassion.
The opening of the Alegria Campus is part of a broader push to decentralize education across Cebu. It creates opportunities for learners who previously faced barriers of distance and cost. The campus is expected to become a center of learning and community development.
A Musical Tribute to Excellence
The CNU Chorale added warmth and elegance to the occasion with their inspiring performance. Their voices reflected the joy and hope surrounding the new campus. The musical tribute underscored the university's rich tradition of excellence and artistry.
The celebration concluded with a shared commitment to transformative education. The campus is not just a building; it is a promise to the community. CNU-Alegria is set to become a beacon of opportunity for generations to come.
