TACLOBAN CITY — Basketball enthusiasm reached a high point across Eastern Visayas as the Tacloban Inter-Municipality Basketball Tournament officially kicked off at the iconic Tacloban Astrodome. Bringing together top hoopers from key cities and municipalities in Leyte, Samar, and Biliran, the tournament serves as a major showcase of inter-regional sportsmanship and athletic talent.
Seven Delegations Clash for the Title
According to OIC City Sports Coordinator Michael Octaviano, seven formidable teams are set to compete in the tournament:
Tacloban City
Ormoc City
Alangalang
Dulag
Caibiran (Biliran)
Basey (Samar)
The participating delegations represent a mix of established municipal teams and highly competitive provincial contenders, ensuring fast-paced action throughout the tournament bracket.
Championship Sunday and General Admission
Basketball fans and community supporters can catch the high-stakes games live at the Tacloban Astrodome. Organizers announced that the grand championship game will take place on Sunday, August 16, where the top two surviving teams will face off for the crown.
To ensure open access for local spectators while managing venue operations, the City Sports Office has set general admission tickets at a nominal fee of ₱20.
₱100,000 Prize Purse on the Line
Beyond regional bragging rights, the stakes remain high for all participating teams. The tournament champions will walk away with a ₱100,000 cash prize, alongside trophy honors and official recognition from the Tacloban City Sports Office. The event forms part of the city's broader push to promote grassroots athletic development, strengthen inter-LGU camaraderie, and sustain sports tourism across Region VIII.
