A new addition to the university library is helping bring the natural and cultural beauty of Negros Oriental closer to students and readers. Six student-interns from Central Mindanao University recently donated a copy of “Ridge to Reef: Your Negros Oriental” to the university library after completing their On-the-Job Training at the National Museum of the Philippines – Dumaguete City. The publication offers readers an opportunity to learn more about the province's landscapes, communities, and natural attractions, highlighting the connection between its mountains, forests, rivers, coastlines, and marine environments.
Students Give Back Through Knowledge
The donated book came from six Bachelor of Arts in English Language Studies students from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Central Mindanao University. Their internship experience at the National Museum of the Philippines – Dumaguete City provided them with an opportunity to gain practical experience while engaging with the cultural and heritage resources of Negros Oriental. Upon returning to the university, the students chose to share the publication with their community by turning it over to the university library.
Their contribution demonstrates how student experiences can extend beyond academic requirements and become opportunities to support learning for others.
Discovering the Province From Ridge to Reef
“Ridge to Reef: Your Negros Oriental” was published by the Negros Oriental Tourism Board and presents the province through its diverse natural environments. The title itself reflects the range of landscapes found across Negros Oriental, from elevated areas and mountain ecosystems to rivers, coastal communities, and marine environments. For students and visitors alike, resources such as this can provide a deeper appreciation of the province beyond its well-known tourist destinations.
Connecting Tourism and Education
The addition of the publication to the university library also highlights the relationship between tourism and education. Books about local destinations can serve as useful references for students studying tourism, culture, history, geography, environmental topics, and communication. They also allow readers to explore their own region through documented information and visual materials. Having locally focused resources in academic libraries helps encourage students to learn more about the places and communities surrounding them.
