SAN REMIGIO, Cebu — Governor Pamela Baricuatro pledged funding for key agricultural and infrastructure projects in Barangay Libaong after visiting the upland community on Friday, October 9, 2026. The governor saw firsthand the rough, unpaved roads farmers use to transport their produce.

A Promise for Better Roads

Governor Baricuatro vowed to pursue the concreting of a farm-to-market road to improve access to farms. She acknowledged the difficulty farmers face in bringing their harvests to market. "Malipayon ko nga naabot dinhi pero at the same time masulob-on sad kay hangtod karon, nganong ing-ani gihapon ang inyong dalan sa Libaong?" she said.

The provincial government committed to allocating funds for the project by 2027. She stressed the need to improve road access and support the productivity of farmers in the barangay. She urged San Remigio Vice Mayor Alfie Corominas to prepare resolutions for the road concreting and a covered court.

Cebu as Corn Capital

During the Farmers' Field Day, Governor Baricuatro shared her vision of making Cebu the corn capital of the Philippines. She identified agriculture as a major priority of her administration in 2027. She pledged a ₱4-million corn drying facility for San Remigio.

The budget for a tractor and harvester has already been approved to strengthen corn production. This provides farmers with better access to agricultural machinery. She emphasized that increasing local corn production supports the province's hog industry, which relies on corn for livestock feeds.

Agriculture as a Priority

"Agriculture will be my focus next year," Governor Baricuatro said. She noted that healthcare had been addressed, and now it was time to give attention to agriculture. She observed that the sector had been neglected for a long time, contributing to high inflation rates in the province.

She stressed that food security is at risk because the province is not producing enough of its own food. The governor called for greater provincial investment in agriculture to help farmers maximize their land. She sees immense potential in San Remigio and wants farmers to become more productive.

Technology Demonstration

The Farmers' Field Day featured the Department of Agriculture in Central Visayas' 100-hectare Adaptive Balanced Fertilization Strategy Yellow Corn Technology Demonstration. The initiative showcases improved corn production practices to local farmers. San Remigio Mayor Mariano Martinez and other municipal officials attended the activity.

The demonstration aims to help farmers increase yields through better fertilization techniques. It complements the provincial government's commitment to providing machinery and infrastructure. Together, these efforts support the goal of strengthening local food production.

A Vision for 2027

Governor Baricuatro's pledges signal a significant shift toward agricultural development in Cebu. By investing in roads, drying facilities, and machinery, the province aims to boost productivity and reduce dependence on imported food. The initiatives also support the hog industry and improve rural livelihoods.

Farmers in Barangay Libaong can look forward to better access to markets and modern equipment. The governor's hands-on approach demonstrates her commitment to addressing their long-standing challenges. With continued collaboration between the provincial government, municipal officials, and national agencies, Cebu moves closer to becoming a corn-producing powerhouse.
