The Bridge Changed the Map, Not Every Delivery
OZAMIZ CITY - The Panguil Bay Bridge dramatically shortened passenger travel between Misamis Occidental and Lanao del Norte, but freight operators have different requirements to consider. A September 20 report by Metro Cagayan de Oro and Northern Mindanao said some logistics operators had begun returning to the Mukas Port–Ozamiz Port route as fuel prices rose and heavy trucks encountered the bridge's 30-ton weight restriction. This does not mean the bridge has lost its transportation value; rather, it shows that different routes can serve different kinds of movement. For lighter vehicles, the bridge offers a direct road connection, while heavier cargo may still require a maritime option.
Ozamiz Port Keeps Moving With the Market
The renewed use of the traditional ferry route gives Ozamiz Port a practical role in an evolving logistics network. Heavy trucks that cannot conveniently use the bridge because of its weight restriction can continue using ferry services to cross between the two sides of Panguil Bay. The September report noted that activity at Mukas Port had increased in recent months, although it remained below levels seen before the bridge opened. For Ozamiz, that creates an interesting transportation picture in which the city's port remains useful even after a major bridge has provided a faster alternative for many other travelers.
Two Routes, Different Jobs
The bigger story is not really about choosing between a bridge and a port; it is about how transportation systems adapt when circumstances change. Fuel prices, vehicle weight, cargo requirements, travel time, and operating costs can all influence which route makes sense for a particular shipment. Ozamiz is positioned within that network because its port can accommodate maritime movement while the surrounding road system connects the city to neighboring communities. The September development therefore provides a fresh perspective on connectivity: infrastructure does not always replace what came before it, and an older route can acquire a different purpose when a newer one enters the picture.
