DAVAO — The local government of Davao City is planning to deploy artificial intelligence and robotics in government services, with tourism among the priority sectors. The initiative aims to make the city more accessible and convenient for visitors while streamlining public transactions.
Robots to Guide Tourists and Locals
Councilor Bonz Andre Militar, chairperson of the City Council Committee on Information Technology, said robots with AI capability may soon be installed in parks, airports, and government agencies. Tourists and residents alike can ask questions and receive instant guidance on transactions and directions.
The robots are envisioned to assist visitors navigating the city's attractions and accomplishing government requirements. "Mag-guide sila like online transaction pwede nila gamiton ang robot," Militar said. The project is still in the planning stage, with collaboration sought from AI and robotics companies.
AI Ready for Digital Transformation
Militar confirmed that the City Information Technology Center and its personnel are prepared for the shift. He noted that training is part of the plan to ensure employees can manage and operate the new systems effectively.
The city government has already approved an ordinance on AI-powered facial recognition and geolocator technology. Another ordinance established a centralized data center to safeguard government records, addressing cybersecurity concerns. The data center will also support the upcoming Davao City Citizen ID.
Building on Innovation Momentum
The plan gained momentum during the ASEAN Innovation Summit held at the SMX Convention Center Davao. Organized by the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industries Inc., the event connected local officials with technology firms specializing in AI and robotics.
Militar expressed confidence that Mayor Sebastian Z. Duterte will support the investments. He emphasized that the city's current thrust is geared toward digital transformation, making government transactions faster and more efficient for everyone.
A Model for Other LGUs
A recent study by the Philippine Institute of Development Studies found that most local government units scored low in AI adoption readiness. Davao City is among the few actively crafting ordinances and building personnel capacity.
The tourism angle is particularly promising. AI robots at airports and parks can provide multilingual assistance, answer common questions, and offer recommendations on local dining and attractions. This enhances the visitor experience from arrival to departure without adding strain on human staff.
