Giving Schools Flexibility to Respond to Extreme Heat
BACOLOD - The decision to suspend face-to-face classes due to high heat index conditions has been entrusted to school principals and the Schools Division Office, according to the city's announcement on November 3. This allows school administrators to evaluate their own facilities, classroom conditions, and students' exposure to heat before deciding whether in-person learning should continue. While some classrooms have air-conditioning and better cooling facilities, many public schools may need to take additional precautions. This school-level approach recognizes that temperature conditions and available resources can differ from one campus to another.
Shifting to Alternative Ways of Learning
Several schools, including Bacolod City National High School, Singcang Airport National High School, Luis Hervias National High School, Domingo Lacson National High School, and Negros Occidental High School, shifted to Alternative Delivery Modes during the heat-related suspension. Students were informed through school group chats and instructed to wait for learning activities they could complete outside the classroom. These arrangements help reduce exposure to extreme temperatures while allowing lessons and school responsibilities to continue. Clear communication between teachers, students, and parents is essential so learners understand their assignments and expectations.
Making Student Safety Part of School Preparedness
Periods of extreme heat encourage schools and families to strengthen their preparation for changing weather conditions. Schools can monitor heat advisories, improve classroom ventilation, provide access to drinking water, and adjust outdoor activities when temperatures become uncomfortable. Parents can also remind children to stay hydrated, limit unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight, and follow official school announcements. By combining flexible learning arrangements with practical heat-safety measures, Bacolod's educational community can help protect students while maintaining continuity in their education.
