Monitoring Giant Clams Supports Marine Conservation

BOHOL - Bohol continues to strengthen coastal protection through resource monitoring and marine protected area management. On September 23, 2026, the Provincial Environment Management Office–Coastal Resource Management conducted giant clam monitoring at the Virgen Marine Protected Area in Anda. The activity recorded 62 giant clams, with the remaining individuals observed to be in good condition. Two clams were transferred to a more suitable area because of limited space inside the existing cage. Among the 20 permanently measured specimens, the average shell length was 49.76 centimeters, while the largest measured 56.5 centimeters. Regular monitoring helps document the condition of marine resources and provides information that can guide future conservation activities.

Boundary Markers Help Protect Anda’s Marine Area

Alongside the monitoring activity, the team installed four buoys to clearly mark the boundaries of the Virgen Marine Protected Area. Visible boundary markers help identify protected waters and support local efforts to manage activities within designated marine areas. The initiative involved the provincial coastal resource management team, the local government’s coastal resource management officer, volunteers, and representatives of a local fisheries association. Cooperation among government personnel and community partners can help strengthen awareness of marine protection and encourage shared responsibility for coastal resources. Clear boundaries also help communicate the importance of preserving habitats where marine life can thrive.

Protecting Marine Life Strengthens Bohol’s Natural Heritage

Giant clams are part of the rich marine biodiversity found in tropical coastal environments, making their monitoring an important part of local conservation work. In Anda, protecting marine habitats also supports the long-term value of coastal ecosystems for communities and responsible tourism. Continued observation, proper management of protected areas, and cooperation with local stakeholders can help safeguard marine resources for future generations. These efforts align with broader environmental protection goals within the Bohol Island UNESCO Global Geopark, where natural heritage and community stewardship are important parts of sustainable development. By maintaining regular monitoring and improving the identification of protected waters, Bohol can continue building awareness of the importance of healthy oceans and resilient coastal communities.
