As green energy installations multiply across the islands, these infrastructure upgrades ensure that the local grid can efficiently absorb clean power without compromising system reliability

Upgrading the Cebu-Lapu-Lapu Power Highway

A cornerstone of this infrastructure push is the high-capacity Cebu-Lapu-Lapu 230-kilovolt transmission line and substation project. Designed to replace and upgrade older 138-kilovolt systems that are rapidly approaching their limits, the project incorporates advanced overhead lines, submarine cable circuits, and modern substations situated in Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu City. This massive capacity boost is critical for sustaining the economic development, tourism infrastructure, and heavy commercial growth concentrated throughout Metro Cebu and Mactan Island. By strengthening these localized loops, the grid can seamlessly distribute reliable electricity straight to distribution utilities and end-users.

Expanding Inter-Island Power Sharing and Stability

Beyond local distribution corridors, the NGCP is advancing inter-regional connectivity through the Cebu-Leyte Interconnection Lines 3 and 4 project. This vital expansion adds new submarine cable circuits that increase power-sharing capabilities among Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao by up to 1,200 megawatts. Walter Bayron, NGCP transmission manager for operations and maintenance, noted that this robust network is essential for accommodating incoming green energy power plants. With more than 20 solar power facilities now active in the region—contributing close to 800 megawatts of installed capacity—inter-island interconnectivity ensures surplus clean energy can be shared nationwide.

Balancing the Grid with Renewable Integration

The surge in clean energy generation across the Visayas is largely driven by Department of Energy (DOE) initiatives encouraging aggressive private-sector investments in solar and wind technologies. To prevent instability, the NGCP utilizes a balanced energy mix strategy, coupling intermittent solar and wind generation with reliable baseload sources to ensure uninterrupted power delivery day and night. As these transmission corridors and substations reach completion, they mark a monumental leap forward in transforming the Philippines' power grid into a smarter, greener, and more resilient network capable of supporting long-term economic prosperity.
