LEYTE - The Philippine Information Agency reported on July 20, 2026, that the Department of Tourism and Department of Science and Technology in Eastern Visayas had formalized a partnership with tourism stakeholders to develop the Leyte Science Trails. The concept is designed to highlight the province's strengths in innovation, sustainability, and resilience. Instead of organizing a trip solely around famous landmarks, the initiative introduces the possibility of visiting places connected to scientific achievements, research, technology, and environmental efforts. This approach could make the province especially interesting for students, researchers, families, and travelers who enjoy educational experiences. It also creates a new way of thinking about what counts as a tourist attraction.
Ormoc and Baybay Could Form One Interesting Travel Cluster
One of the pilot concepts identified in the report is the Ormoc–Baybay Cluster, which carries the theme "Powering Nature and Innovation." The proposed focus includes renewable energy, environmental conservation, agricultural technologies, and innovation-driven enterprises in western Leyte. This is particularly interesting because Ormoc and Baybay already have different tourism identities, with Ormoc known for its agricultural heritage and natural attractions while Baybay has strong connections to agriculture and education. A science-tourism route could potentially connect these different strengths into one broader travel story. For visitors, that could mean seeing familiar places through a new lens and learning about the industries and technologies that support communities across western Leyte.
The Province Could Tell Its Story Through Resilience
The second pilot cluster, connecting Tacloban and Palo, carries the theme "Science of Resilience and Recovery." According to the PIA report, the proposed circuit will feature destinations related to disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation, scientific research, public health, and post-disaster recovery. This gives travelers another way to understand the region's history and development by looking at how communities prepare for and respond to challenges. The concept is especially notable because it presents resilience not simply as a slogan but as something that can be explored through institutions, programs, and local experiences. Although the Science Trails were only formally established after the user's preferred July 17 cutoff, the initiative represents one of the newest tourism concepts connected to Leyte and offers a genuinely different angle for future travel content.
