BUTUAN CITY — The City Government of Butuan and the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) Region XIII have formalized a Memorandum of Agreement for the construction of a City-Wide Ice Plant and Cold Storage Facility. The project aims to help preserve freshly harvested fish and reduce post-harvest losses, addressing a critical need in the local fisheries sector. The facility is expected to provide significant support to fisherfolk and fish traders in maintaining the quality of their catch.

A Key Component of the FishCoRe Project

The project is part of the Philippine Fisheries and Coastal Resiliency or FishCoRe Project, which is supported by the World Bank. The facility will be established in Barangay Pagatpatan and is designed to serve as a central hub for ice production, blast freezing, cold storage, and fish handling. This strategic location will make it accessible to various stakeholders in the fisheries industry, ensuring that the benefits of the project reach those who need it most.

Benefits for Fisherfolk and the Community

The facility will be available for use by fisherfolk, fish traders, aquaculture operators, and fisheries organizations. It will help extend the quality and shelf life of fish products, minimize spoilage, and expand marketing opportunities for local producers. By providing reliable cold storage and ice production, the project aims to address the common challenge of post-harvest losses that often affect the income of fisherfolk. The facility is seen as a vital step in ensuring a stable and high-quality food supply for the community.

Strengthening Partnerships for Development

The collaboration between the local government and national agencies reflects a shared commitment to implementing more projects and improving services for the people of Butuan. Through this facility, the city aims to provide a high-quality food supply while also increasing the income of local fisherfolk. The partnership serves as a model for how government agencies can work together to address the needs of the community and promote sustainable development in the fisheries sector.
