TANAUAN, LEYTE — The Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office 8 (DA RFO 8) marked Philippine Bamboo Month by leading a bamboo tree-planting initiative in Tanauan, Leyte, on September 25, 2026, advancing efforts to transform the humble plant into a lucrative green commodity across Eastern Visayas.
Climate Resilience and Environmental Protection
The activity opened with a technical orientation detailing proper cultivation methods, highlighting bamboo's role in safeguarding vulnerable ecosystems:
Typhoon Buffer: DA RFO 8 OIC-Regional Technical Director for Operations Francisco C. Rosaroso highlighted bamboo as a vital natural shield against severe typhoons and climate hazards in the region.
Soil Stabilization: The plant's extensive root system prevents soil erosion along riverbanks and watersheds while actively assisting in carbon sequestration.
Economic Viability and Agricultural Investment
Beyond ecological protection, regional agricultural planners are positioning bamboo as a reliable driver of long-term economic growth for farming households:
High-Value Commodity: OIC-Field Operations Division Chief Lor Fatima A. Bucatcat emphasized that the program aims to highlight bamboo's commercial viability and expand revenue-generating opportunities for the local agricultural sector.
Multi-Agency Mobilization: Spearheaded by the High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP) of DA RFO 8, the drive brought together teams from the Provincial Agricultural Office of Leyte and the Municipal Agriculture Office of Tanauan.
Supply Chain Building: By cultivating bamboo on underutilized lands, DA RFO 8 aims to establish a steady regional supply chain that strengthens rural livelihoods against economic and environmental risks.
