A brand new chapter and an overwhelming sense of hope have welcomed the family of 15-year-old Mark John Luzung after he successfully underwent life-saving open-heart surgery to repair a hole in his heart. Mark John was born with a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), a type of congenital heart disease where there is a hole between the two lower chambers of the heart . For years, his family lived under the impression that the condition had naturally healed as he grew older. However, their world was upended during a routine medical examination for an upcoming youth jamboree, where doctors discovered that the defect was still present and required immediate surgical intervention.
Full Support from the Alagang Nanay Program
The news hit the family hard, especially after learning that the open-heart surgery would cost around PHP 550,000—a figure far beyond their financial reach. At their lowest point, when hope seemed entirely out of sight, an unexpected lifeline emerged. Through the "Alagang Nanay Preventive Healthcare Program," spearheaded by Pampanga Governor Lilia "Nanay" Pineda and Vice Governor Dennis "Delta" Pineda, Mark John was granted full financial assistance for his operation. The family did not have to pay a single centavo for the life-saving procedure.
A Heart Healed, A Life Renewed
"I could barely hold back my tears," expressed Mark John's emotional mother, Joanna Manuel, after seeing her son safely pull through the critical surgery. The young man's heart, which once desperately needed healing, is now beating stronger than ever, giving him a renewed chance at a bright future. Mark John is currently on the road to a full recovery, his family deeply grateful to the leaders and medical teams who extended a helping hand during their darkest hour. The Alagang Nanay program continues to provide medical assistance to Kapampangans in need, reinforcing the provincial government's commitment to ensuring that no family has to face life-threatening health challenges alone.
