PAMPANGA - NLEX Corporation has officially launched the "I Care For Strays" program, introducing a dedicated 31-member Animal Rescue Team trained to rescue stray animals along the expressway for safer roads and improved animal welfare. The team, composed of NLEX personnel, underwent comprehensive training conducted by the Marilao Municipal Veterinary Services Office and Animal Shelter and Care Facility (ASCF) on proper and humane animal handling and rescue techniques, and were also provided with necessary vaccinations as an added precaution against health risks associated with handling stray animals.
How the Program Works
The NLEX Animal Rescue Team responds to reports of stray animals along the expressway corridor, with rescued dogs and cats being turned over to the Marilao Animal Shelter and Care Facility for continued monitoring and care . The partnership agreement was signed by NLEX President and General Manager Luis S. Reñon and Marilao Mayor Jemina M. Sy, marking the first time an LGU and NLEX have collaborated to achieve both road safety and animal welfare goals . As part of its support for the shelter, NLEX has pledged to provide monthly donations of animal feed and assist in monitoring the health and welfare of rescued animals.
A Broader Commitment to Road Safety
The program is part of NLEX’s broader road safety advocacy, addressing the risks posed by stray animals to motorists while ensuring their welfare . NLEX is also implementing engineering and community-based measures to prevent animals from entering the highway, including intensified daily inspections of perimeter fences, reinforcement of drainage culverts, and partnerships with neighboring barangays to promote responsible pet ownership . This initiative supports NLEX Corporation's commitment to delivering seamless, safe, and world-class highways as the primary infrastructure backbone connecting Metro Manila to Central and Northern Luzon .
