GENERAL LUNA, SURIGAO DEL NORTE — Across the road from Cloud 9, where surfers paddle out before sunrise and spectators gather on the boardwalk, a café has quietly become something other than a place to grab coffee. Coastal Grounds Coffee Siargao opened as the first café venture of the MASA Group, and it has since expanded from a small pocket space inside the Cloud 9 Pops District into a larger standalone destination. The location does part of the work. The rest comes from a menu and an atmosphere that give people reasons to stay long after their cups are empty.

A Coffee Program With Its Own Signatures

The baristas work with Yardstick coffee and local beans sourced from Bukidnon, Davao, and Benguet for pour-over service. That combination of a respected roaster and Philippine-grown beans gives the menu a range that rewards regulars rather than one-time visitors. Signature drinks include the Orange Shakerato, an Italian-style iced coffee shake; the Honey Rose Latte; and the Black Sesame Latte. Lighter options such as the Coconut Sweet Cream Latte and Spanish Latte have drawn their own followings. For warmer afternoons, the twelve-hour cold brew and a line of flavored iced teas offer alternatives to espresso.

The Second Office Phenomenon

Reviews of Coastal Grounds keep returning to the same theme: people arrive for a coffee and end up staying for hours. Reliable WiFi, generous tables, and a playlist that customers describe as unexpectedly good have made the café a de facto workspace for digital nomads, remote employees, and students. The seating spans indoor and outdoor areas, so the atmosphere shifts from air-conditioned focus to open-air conversation depending on where a guest settles. For a surf town that attracts long-stay visitors, that versatility matters. A café that functions as an office during the day and a meeting point in the afternoon serves a need that a purely scenic destination cannot.

A Larger Home in Catangnan

The café outgrew its original space inside the Cloud 9 Pops District and relocated to a new standalone site in Sitio Sta. Ines, Barangay Catangnan, which soft-launched in September 2026. The new location features a much larger layout, expanded seating, and a larger kitchen, giving the business room to serve both the remote-work crowd and the surf traffic that passes through the area. The move reflects a broader pattern for General Luna's homegrown enterprises, which are investing in physical infrastructure at a moment when the town's international profile has never been higher. For Coastal Grounds, the shift from a pocket space to a standalone destination signals a business that has found its footing and is building for the long term.
