NAGA CITY, Cebu — Rising above the coastal plains of southern Cebu, Mount Naupa stands as one of the most accessible and visually rewarding peaks in the province. Tucked between Barangay Lanas and Barangay Cogon in the City of Naga, this 584-meter summit offers a refreshing escape from the urban density of Metro Cebu, earning its reputation as a quintessential beginner's climb.
A Landscape of Rolling Green Ridges
Unlike the dense rainforest trails found elsewhere on Cebu Island, Mount Naupa's summit features open, rolling grassy hills that evoke pastoral meadows. The ridge provides an unobstructed 360-degree panorama, with the Bohol Strait and Metro Cebu's silhouette visible to the east, and rugged central Cebu mountains stretching across the western and southern horizons.
During early morning hours, the valley frequently collects moisture, creating a stunning sea of clouds phenomenon. As dawn breaks, light filters through the low-lying mist, illuminating the grassy knolls in vibrant golden-green hues. In the late afternoon, the peak becomes an exceptional vantage point for sunset, casting long shadows and filling the sky with gradients of orange and magenta.
Getting There and Trail Details
Reaching Mount Naupa from Metro Cebu is straightforward. Commuters board any south-bound bus from Cebu South Bus Terminal heading toward Minglanilla, Naga, or Carcar, alighting at Barangay Tungkop in Minglanilla near landmarks like Lolo Tinong's Bakeshop or the Sisters of Mary School. The fare costs around ₱25 to ₱30, with travel time of 45 to 60 minutes.
From Tungkop, a habal-habal ride takes visitors to the main trailhead at Cogon Chapel or Cogon Elementary School in Barangay Cogon, Naga. The uphill journey winds through concrete roads and rural pathways for approximately 20 to 30 minutes, with standard fares around ₱50 per passenger. Upon arrival, trekkers register at the local site office and pay a ₱20 environmental fee.
The standard hike covers a concise distance with gentle elevation gain, typically taking between 30 to 45 minutes to complete. The trail begins on a gradual dirt path passing through residential hamlets, backyard farms, and banana groves before opening to ridges lined with tall cogon grass and wildflowers.
Camping Above the Clouds
While day hiking is popular, overnight camping remains one of the best ways to experience Mount Naupa. The expansive, flat grassy plateau beneath the summit serves as a natural campsite accommodating dozens of tents. Night temperatures drop significantly, delivering cool breezes that contrast sharply with coastal humidity.
Campers are rewarded with unobstructed views of city lights sparkling in the distance alongside a star-lit sky. Waking early allows campers to witness morning fog rolling over the hills as the sun rises over Cebu's east coast. Visitors should bring wind-resistant pitching gear, thermal clothing, headlamps, and adequate water, as no piped sources exist at the summit.
Responsible Trekking Practices
As Mount Naupa's popularity grows, preserving its natural state has become a priority for the local community. Visitors are urged to carry all personal trash back down to the jump-off point for proper disposal. Staying on designated trails prevents soil erosion along the grassy ridges.
Open campfires are strictly regulated or prohibited during dry months when cogon grass presents a fire hazard. Portable gas stoves are recommended for camping meals. Respecting local residents by keeping noise levels down during late hours ensures harmonious coexistence between visitors and the community.
