SINGAPORE — The Philippine Embassy in Singapore transformed its newly redeveloped Chancery into a stage for Original Pilipino Music on July 24, 2026. The concert, titled “Mecosono: In a Chamber Concertino,” marked the first musical performance at Sinagtala Hall and celebrated Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino.
A Historic Night at Sinagtala Hall
Ambassador Medardo G. Macaraig welcomed the Filipino community and embassy personnel to the landmark event. He noted that the same hall had recently hosted high‑level business meetings during a presidential visit. Now, it fulfilled its dual purpose as a space for diplomacy and cultural expression.
The ambassador underscored this year’s theme, “Musika at Himig Natin: Tradisyon, Industriya, at Bagong Tinig.” He stressed the importance of preserving Philippine musical traditions, supporting emerging artists, and promoting OPM internationally. The concert embodied that mission.
Young Musicians from Rizal Take Center Stage
The Mecosono Chamber Orchestra, a youthful ensemble from the province of Rizal, delivered a diverse repertoire. Their instruments—strings, winds, keyboard, and percussion—filled the hall with Filipino folk songs, beloved OPM classics, and bossa nova selections. The program concluded with an encore of “Home,” a tribute to Singapore.
The orchestra was led by Executive Director Carlo Florendo and introduced by Mecosono President William Khalid Vibar, a violinist for the University of the Philippines Symphony Orchestra. Their participation extended beyond the Embassy, as they also performed at the Singapore Poetry Festival on July 26.
A Broader Celebration of Philippine Music
The concert was just one highlight of the Embassy’s observance of Philippine Music Week. Across Singapore, other Filipino artists contributed to the celebration. Instrumentalists Monching Carpio and John Raymond Sarreal performed alongside the jazz ensemble SANPY, led by Mar Dizon. Singapore‑based vocalist Yvette Atienza and the PsalmiDeo Chorale also lent their voices.
These simultaneous performances showcased the richness and diversity of Filipino musical talent. The Embassy’s initiative reinforced the message that OPM is alive and thriving beyond Philippine shores.
Cultural Diplomacy Through Song
Observed every last week of July under Presidential Proclamation No. 933, Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino promotes greater appreciation of Philippine music. The Embassy’s concert demonstrated how music can serve as a bridge between nations and a unifier for the Filipino diaspora. The successful staging at the new Chancery sets a precedent for future cultural events, strengthening the Philippines’ soft power in Singapore.
