MANAMA, Bahrain — The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) office in Bahrain rolled out two new skills development programs on July 17, 2026, offering free IELTS review and barista training to overseas Filipino workers. The initiative is designed to unlock career growth and new livelihood opportunities for Filipinos in the Kingdom.
Sharpening English Proficiency for Global Careers
Fifty OFWs gathered at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Manama for the first session of the IELTS Review Program. Facilitated by educators from the Philippine Teachers Association‑Bahrain and the Filipino Club Bahrain, the training focused on listening skills, exam strategies, and time management. The program targets both the Academic and General Training modules of the international English test.
For many participants, an IELTS certificate is a gateway to better employment, university admission, or permanent residency in English‑speaking countries. The review sessions provide structured guidance that would otherwise be costly and difficult to access while working overseas. The training equips OFWs with the confidence to pursue their long‑term goals.
Brewing New Skills in the Café Industry
Simultaneously, 20 OFWs and their dependents began a two‑week Barista Skills Training at Medici Global’s facility in Al Hadi Complex, Gudaibiya. The hands‑on course covers espresso extraction, milk frothing, latte art, and machine maintenance. Participants gain practical knowledge they can use to seek employment in Bahrain’s thriving café scene or to launch their own small businesses upon returning home.
The barista program goes beyond basic coffee preparation. It teaches customer service, café workflow management, and the fundamentals of the coffee value chain. For dependents who are often restricted from formal employment, this skill opens an entrepreneurial path. The training is a concrete investment in their economic independence.
Government Commitment to Lifelong Learning
The initiative aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to expand upskilling and lifelong learning opportunities for overseas Filipino workers. OWWA Welfare Officer Juvilyn Gumabay said the agency remains committed to protecting and empowering OFWs through education and skills development, despite regional challenges. The programs are designed to be practical, accessible, and immediately applicable.
Philippine Ambassador to Bahrain Gines Jaime Ricardo D. Gallaga noted that investing in new skills creates greater opportunities for career growth and long‑term financial security. He emphasized that these trainings are part of a broader whole‑of‑government approach to ensure that Filipino workers are not just protected abroad, but equipped to succeed wherever life takes them.
A Comprehensive Support Ecosystem
The skills training was complemented by the monthly Lingkod Kababayan Friday at the Philippine Embassy, where OFWs accessed consular services, SSS and Pag‑IBIG support, overseas voting registration, and employment contract processing. This one‑stop approach ensures that workers can address multiple needs in a single visit, maximizing their limited free time.
The combination of skills development and accessible government services reflects OWWA’s mission of Alagang OWWA—caring for OFWs from deployment to reintegration. As the programs continue, more batches of IELTS and barista trainees are expected, building a stronger, more resilient Filipino workforce in Bahrain.
