TAGBILARAN CITY, BOHOL — The provincial government of Bohol, together with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, turned over 130 fabricated fiberglass fishing boats to various People's Organizations on June 2, 2026. The turnover aims to expand livelihood opportunities, strengthen food security, and empower coastal communities across the province. The boats were distributed through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, led by Liza Quirog.

The fleet includes 10 non‑motorized paddle boats, five 30‑footer motorized boats, and 115 units of 22‑footer motorized boats. Beneficiaries come from 33 municipalities across Bohol, from Alburquerque and Anda to Ubay and Valencia. The wide distribution ensures that fishing communities from different coastal barangays receive the tools they need to increase their catch and income.

A Province‑Wide Investment in Livelihood

The provincial government allocated a substantial amount for the boats, viewing the investment as a direct path to lowering fish prices in local markets. By equipping fisherfolk with modern fiberglass boats, the province aims to increase the volume of fish landed daily. Greater supply is expected to bring down market prices, making fresh seafood more affordable for Boholano families.

Beyond economics, the initiative strengthens the capacity of organized fishing groups. Some associations are being positioned to manage commercial fishing boats with government support. The province's vision is for each fisherfolk organization to contribute to an abundant seafood supply, driving community development and food self‑sufficiency. The program also supports the tourism sector indirectly, as fresh seafood is a cornerstone of Bohol's culinary appeal to visitors.

A Message of Unity and Progress

Governor Erico Aristotle Aumentado expressed optimism that cooperation among fishing communities will lead to progress. The turnover ceremony emphasized bayanihan, with local officials and BFAR representatives present to support the beneficiaries. The event underscored the provincial government's commitment to uplifting the lives of ordinary Boholanos through concrete, tangible assistance.

For the recipients, the boats represent more than fiberglass and motors. They are a lifeline for families whose livelihoods depend on the sea, offering the promise of a more secure and prosperous future. With these new vessels, Bohol's fisherfolk are better equipped to harvest the rich waters of the Visayan Sea, ensuring that the province's tradition of sustainable fishing continues for generations to come.
