Households Take Part in Proper Waste Separation
BACOLOD - Barangay Handumanan began implementing its "No Segregation, No Collection" initiative on November 6, 2026, covering Puroks 1–6 and approximately 700 to 800 households. Under the program, residents are expected to separate biodegradable waste from non-biodegradable materials before collection. This practice helps make garbage handling more organized and allows different types of waste to be directed toward appropriate processing methods. By starting at the household level, the initiative encourages families to take an active role in improving their surroundings and making waste management part of their everyday routine.
Biodegradable Waste Gets a Separate Destination
An important part of the initiative is the collection of biodegradable materials for delivery to the National Economic Development Foundation (NEDF) for processing. Diverting organic waste from the landfill can help reduce the amount of garbage requiring final disposal. Food scraps and other suitable biodegradable materials can be processed through appropriate methods instead of being mixed with plastics and other non-biodegradable waste. This approach also demonstrates how proper segregation can support broader environmental goals while helping communities make better use of the waste they generate.
Education and Cooperation Guide the Pilot Program
During the initial implementation, education and cooperation are being prioritized, with no penalties imposed for the time being. Residents and other stakeholders are being encouraged to understand the segregation process and develop consistent disposal habits. This gradual approach gives households an opportunity to adjust, ask questions, and become familiar with collection requirements. As the program develops, cooperation among residents, barangay personnel, and waste management partners will be important in maintaining its effectiveness. The experience in Handumanan can also provide useful lessons for other communities interested in adopting similar practices to reduce waste and maintain cleaner neighborhoods.
