Remembering the Courage Behind the Negros Revolution

BACOLOD - The provincial government of Negros Occidental commemorates Cinco de Noviembre every November 5 to remember the uprising of 1898, when Negrense revolutionaries rose against Spanish colonial rule. This historic event, also known as the Negros Revolution, represents the courage and collective determination of people who worked together toward freedom. With the 2026 celebration carrying the theme "One Negros, One People, One History," the commemoration encourages residents to appreciate the sacrifices of earlier generations and understand how their actions helped shape the province's identity. Cities such as Bago, Silay, and Talisay also hold commemorative activities because of their important roles in the uprising.

Celebrating Negrenses Who Enrich Arts and Culture

The occasion also recognizes individuals whose work has helped preserve and strengthen Filipino arts and culture. This year's Outstanding Negrense honorees include Nunelucio Melocoton Alvarado, National Artist for Visual Arts, and the late Theodoro "Teddy" Hilado, National Artist for Theater. Their recognition highlights the importance of creative expression in documenting experiences, sharing stories, and passing cultural traditions to future generations. By celebrating artists alongside historical figures, the province reminds residents that contributing to society can take many forms, including creating works that educate, inspire, and preserve a community's heritage.

Recognizing Contributions to Provincial Development

The provincial government will also recognize the Top 10 Taxpayers in the corporate and individual categories for their contributions through tax payments. These revenues help fund government operations and support public services and development programs. The recognition reflects the shared role of businesses and individuals in sustaining the province's needs. Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson also emphasized that heroism can be expressed through everyday acts of service, from helping neighbors to assisting communities during emergencies. In this way, Cinco de Noviembre connects the courage of historical revolutionaries with the responsibility of present-day Negrenses to support one another and contribute to their communities.
