MONTEVISTA, Davao de Oro — Farmers, fisherfolk, and indigent families across the province received a massive boost this week as the national government rolled out agricultural machinery, irrigation materials, and healthcare funding under the “Bawat Bayan Makikinabang” program. The assistance aims to raise rural incomes, increase food production, and strengthen public health services.
Modern Machines for the Fields
A rice combine harvester was turned over to Montevista, a machine that cuts, threshes, and cleans grain in a single pass. This equipment slashes post‑harvest losses and frees farmers from labor‑intensive manual harvesting. Its arrival signals a shift toward mechanized agriculture that can increase yields and reduce the time between field and market.
A four‑wheel tractor was also distributed to farmers in New Bataan. The tractor speeds up land preparation, allowing multiple cropping cycles per year. With reliable horsepower, smallholder farmers can cultivate larger areas and improve soil quality through timely plowing, directly boosting their earning potential.
Irrigation, Seeds, and Fishing Support
High‑density polyethylene pipes were delivered to vegetable growers in Compostela, strengthening irrigation for high‑value crops. Certified inbred rice seeds and fertilizers were distributed province‑wide to enhance crop resilience and seasonal harvests. These inputs form a complete package that addresses both water access and seed quality.
For coastal and inland communities, the program provided four motorized fiberglass boats to fisherfolk in Maco and Mabini, extending their fishing range safely. Fifteen thousand tilapia fingerlings were stocked in Monkayo and Nabunturan to revitalize local aquaculture. Together, these resources create a stronger, more diversified rural economy.
Affordable Rice and Healthcare Guarantee
The “Benteng Bigas” initiative brought ₱20 per kilogram rice directly to households in Nabunturan, easing the burden of rising food costs. The subsidy ensures that even the poorest families can put affordable, high‑quality rice on their tables, protecting purchasing power in vulnerable communities.
The provincial hospital in Montevista received ₱147.9 million in financial assistance to sustain operations and upgrade facilities. Hospital chief Dr. Ferdinand Anthony Soberano emphasized the Zero Balance Billing policy, which guarantees indigent patients receive medical care without out‑of‑pocket expenses. The funding ensures that health services remain accessible to those who need them most.
