DAVAO — The City Government of Davao is exploring ways to enter the cruise tourism market, with an international cruise ship company expressing interest in making the city a port of call. The initiative could open a new frontier for the local tourism industry.
A Prospective Investor Makes Initial Inquiries
Willenito Tormis, Officer-in-Charge of the City Tourism Operations Office, revealed that a prospective international cruise ship company is evaluating what Davao City can offer. He shared the development during an interview at the ASEAN Innovation Summit at SMX Davao.
Tormis clarified that discussions remain in the exploratory stage. He said the city is checking possibilities and working to invite more investments of this scale. The potential partnership could bring a new category of high-value travelers to the region.
Coordinating With Port Authorities and Stakeholders
The tourism office is planning to meet with the Philippine Ports Authority to assess docking feasibility. Tormis said the cruise operator's primary concern is what tourists will do during a one-day stop. They are asking about available circuits, tours, and experiences.
He noted that tours and circuits already exist, but the city needs to identify which tourism niche aligns with the cruise market. Tormis emphasized that government efforts alone are insufficient. Support from the private sector and local stakeholders is essential to move the proposal forward.
Building a Case for Cruise Operators
Tormis said the city is gathering sufficient data and support before formally lobbying the cruise operator. He stressed that the process requires collaboration between government agencies, tourism businesses, and community stakeholders. Once all elements align, the city can present a compelling case.
The exploration phase includes assessing infrastructure readiness, security protocols, and the capacity of local tour operators. The city aims to ensure that any cruise stop delivers a memorable experience that encourages return visits and positive word-of-mouth promotion.
New Investments Strengthen MICE Ambitions
Meanwhile, Tormis expressed enthusiasm over new tourism-related investments in Davao City. These include the 75,000-seater King Dome and the 519-room Hotel 101-Davao. He said these developments strengthen the city's bid to become a premier destination for meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions.
More hotel rooms mean more opportunities for micro, small, and medium enterprises, according to Tormis. He noted that investors are increasingly drawn to Davao for hotels, exhibition centers, and other tourism facilities. The MICE sector, in particular, is attracting significant attention from potential investors.
Positioning Davao as a Competitive Destination
The combination of cruise tourism exploration and MICE infrastructure development reflects a broader strategy to diversify Davao's tourism offerings. The city is positioning itself as a competitive player in both leisure and business travel markets.
Tormis said the growing investor confidence signals that Davao's potential is being recognized. He expressed optimism that with sufficient preparation and stakeholder support, the city can attract cruise operators and expand its tourism economy in the coming years.
