Davao — The Davao Region is experiencing a historic surge in its agricultural export sector, successfully penetrating diverse international markets with a variety of high-quality produce. From premium cacao beans and fresh pineapples to unconventional exports like Philippine eel, Davao’s growers and entrepreneurs are making significant strides on the world stage. As highlighted during the Mindanao Trade Expo Kadayawan Festival, this momentum is being driven by a combination of innovation, quality control, and strategic government-industry partnerships that continue to open lucrative doors for Mindanao’s farming communities.
Diversifying Exports to Global Destinations
Recent milestones underscore the versatility of Davao’s agricultural output and its growing appeal to global consumers. Significant shipments this year include a 40-foot container of pineapples delivered to Saudi Arabia, along with substantial exports of saba (cardaba) bananas and singkamas (Jicama) to the same market. Beyond traditional staples, the region has successfully introduced premium cacao beans to New Zealand and completed a trial shipment of Puyat-variety durian to Oman, showcasing the region's ability to meet specialized international demand.
Innovative Commodities and Market Expansion
The export boom is not limited to fruits and vegetables, as the region has also entered new processing markets with high-value commodities. Notably, the first export shipment of Philippine eel (igat or casili) to China has opened a significant new processing avenue for local producers. Additionally, Hass avocados grown in Davao and other parts of Mindanao have officially reached the Japanese market, further diversifying the region's agricultural portfolio.
