DIGOS CITY, Davao del Sur — A young Digoseño has brought international honor to the Philippines after clinching a bronze medal at the 37th International Biology Olympiad (IBO 2026). Shawn Renfred Orevillo Amper, a graduate of the Philippine Science High School Main Campus, shone among the world’s brightest young biologists.
A Triumph on the Global Stage
Amper represented the country in Vilnius, Lithuania, from July 12 to 19, 2026, competing against over 300 students from 78 nations. The IBO is widely regarded as the premier global competition for secondary school life science enthusiasts. His bronze medal marks a rare achievement for a student from the Davao Region.
The competition featured rigorous theoretical examinations and four hands‑on laboratory modules covering molecular biology, animal physiology, plant computational biology, and animal anatomy. Amper’s combined scores across these demanding tests placed him among the top performers worldwide. Out of 302 participants, only 185 medals were awarded, making his bronze a significant accomplishment.

The IBO 2026, hosted by Vilnius University’s Life Sciences Center, was the largest international science event ever held in Lithuania. Participants faced advanced problem‑solving in data analysis, genetics, ecology, and biosystematics during the theoretical exam. Amper’s success is rooted in years of preparation under the guidance of coach Dawn Crisologo at the Philippine Science High School Main Campus.
