DIGOS CITY — Ten barangays from across the city gathered at the Barangay Goma Gymnasium to compete in the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Committee (BDRRMC) Rescuelympics, a showcase of readiness and teamwork during National Disaster Resilience Month.
A Competition for Community Safety
Teams from Aplaya, Binaton, Cogon, Dulangan, Kapatagan, Ruparan, San Jose, San Miguel, Zone 1, and Zone III took part in simulated emergency challenges. They responded to realistic scenarios designed to test first aid, rescue coordination, and quick decision‑making under pressure. The exercises aimed to mirror real crises where every second counts.
Acting CDRRM Officer John Basil A. Sevilla opened the event by stressing the importance of well‑trained barangay responders. He noted that these volunteers are often the first to arrive at an emergency scene. Their preparedness can make the difference between life and loss.
Leaders Praise Volunteer Spirit
City Councilor Liza M. Cagas thanked the participants for dedicating their time despite demanding personal schedules. She called them the first line of defense in any disaster and emphasized that their selflessness strengthens the entire community. Her words drew applause from responders who often work behind the scenes.
Councilor Cagas also reiterated the local government’s commitment to supporting barangay disaster teams. Under Mayor Josef Fortich Cagas, the city continues to invest in training and equipment. The Rescuelympics is one way the LGU ensures that responders remain sharp and confident.

Chief of Planning and Research Kent Gregor J. Abad briefed all teams on the competition mechanics and safety protocols before the first scenario began. He made sure every participant understood the rules and the importance of following proper procedures. The exercises included carrying victims, bandaging wounds, and navigating obstacles as a unit.
The friendly competition fostered camaraderie among barangays that might otherwise rarely interact. Responders exchanged tips and encouraged one another throughout the day. The event proved that readiness is not just about individual skill but about how well teams communicate and cooperate.
