CEBU CITY — Fresh durian, mangosteen, and other premium Mindanao harvests are making their way to Central Visayas as the Department of Agriculture - Davao (DA-11) expands its "Kadiwa on Wheels" initiative. A shipment of 20 metric tons of fruits departs Davao on September 8, with selling scheduled from September 10 to 16 in Cebu City and Bohol.
Direct Farm-to-Table Access for Cebuano Families
Cebuano consumers will soon have direct access to fresh Davao produce at farm-gate prices. The initiative eliminates traditional middlemen, allowing local households to purchase high-value fruits without the usual wholesale markups. This direct connection brings significant price relief during a time when food costs continue to strain family budgets.
The program connects Davao farmer cooperatives directly to urban markets in Central Visayas. The Davao City Durian Industry Development Council and the Durian Industry Association of Davao City are leading the participation. These organizations represent smallholder farmers who traditionally relied on multi-tiered distribution networks that inflated final retail prices.
Strengthening Cebu's Food Security Pipeline
The arrival of 20 metric tons of produce strengthens Cebu's food supply chain. As a highly urbanized province, Cebu relies heavily on agricultural inflows from other regions. Direct trading links between Mindanao producers and Cebuano consumers create a more reliable and resilient food pipeline.
This initiative is part of a larger 70-metric-ton target for the Kadiwa on Wheels program. After Metro Manila sales concluded successfully, Central Visayas became the next priority market. The program is proving that rural cooperatives can effectively access and supply major regional economies beyond Luzon.
Supporting Farmers While Serving Consumers
The initiative creates a win-win scenario. Davao farmers capture a larger percentage of the final sale value, improving their profit margins. Cebuano households, meanwhile, enjoy premium harvests at more affordable prices. This model demonstrates how inter-island agricultural trade can benefit both producers and consumers.
High-value seasonal crops like durian become far more accessible to local buyers. What was once an expensive luxury fruit becomes a reasonable purchase for middle-income families.
