DAVAO CITY — For those willing to venture a little south of Davao City’s busy downtown, a delightful surprise awaits. Tucked away on a tranquil, nature-embraced property at Purok 2 in Tacunan, Coffee By The Way is quickly becoming a cherished retreat for coffee enthusiasts and leisure-seekers from across the metro and beyond. More than just a typical café, this family passion project has blossomed into an award-winning destination, celebrated for its serene atmosphere and unique rustic charm. Whether you call Catalunan Grande, Mintal, or Tugbok home, or are simply curious enough to travel from the north, this hidden gem invites you to slow down, savor the moment, and discover what makes it a true standout in the city’s vibrant coffee scene.
From a Family Sanctuary to a Full-Blown Legacy
The story of Coffee By The Way began not with a business plan, but with a simple, heartfelt desire for a sanctuary. Owner Niptalez “Jeejee” Nuñez Avena shared with SunStar Davao that her family initially just wanted a special place for small gatherings and quality time together. “But realizing that nothing beats digging into good food and coffee, my family thought of creating a space that does not only function as a chill place for us but can also hold people together for an outstanding gastronomic experience,” Avena recounted. Driven by a vision of legacy rather than mere profit, the family converted part of their property, and in May 2022, they opened their doors to the public. The response was overwhelming. Avena expressed her joy that their “passion project is now a full-blown business that is sustaining on its own,” revealing a deeper dream: “My dream for this café is to make it our family legacy. I wish the next generations to also witness this”.
A Tapestry of Texture and Conservation
Stepping into the café feels like entering a different world, one built on a philosophy of conservation and repurposing. Avena shares that their design concept revolves around repurposed materials, taken from one of the family’s first aluminum trucks, combined with sustainable materials–a commitment that has earned them recognition as the Outstanding Rustic Nature-Themed Resto Café in Davao City.
The surrounding natural beauty further elevates the experience. Grapevines creep along the perimeter, while bamboo and mahogany trees provide a refreshing canopy of shade. For those seeking the perfect shot, the café also features Instagram-worthy tables, adding to its growing appeal as a picturesque escape.
A Culinary Journey and an Afternoon Tea Experience
Complementing the stunning environment is a menu designed for connoisseurs and comfort seekers alike. Guests can enjoy a variety of coffee and tea flavors, including a highly recommended signature iced cold brew, available through various promotions. The food menu has also garnered praise for being delicious, and adventurous diners can add a kick to their meal with the café’s popular homemade sili (hot peppers).
Expanding its gastronomic offerings, the café launched its “Afternoon Tea Party” package. A true tea lover, Avena designed the experience to introduce Dabawenyos to the etiquette and joy of a formal tea party. The package, which requires pre-booking and is suitable for six people, can be set up by the pool or at the Chateau, and includes a complete set with two jars of tea leaf, French macaroons, cookies, croffles, and a chocolate fondue set.
Parting Thoughts: A Quiet Escape Worth the Trip
While the café’s excellent service and operating hours (daily from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM) cater to a relaxing pace, patience might be required during large Sunday crowds. Nonetheless, with ample parking available, it’s a journey that proves supremely rewarding for those seeking a quiet, no-frills experience. Coffee By The Way reminds everyone that the best discoveries are often found off the beaten path, waiting to be explored.
