DAVAO — The dream of a world-class aquatic facility in Southern Mindanao is taking shape. The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) recently conducted a joint inspection of the UP Mindanao Aquatic Center, revealing significant upgrades that position the venue as the region's premier training ground for competitive swimming.
A Partnership for Regional Sports
The inspection brought together PSC officials, university leaders, and representatives from Le Bron Construction. Chancellor Lyre Murao led the UP Mindanao delegation, accompanied by key personnel from the Department of Human Kinetics and the administration. Their collaboration underscores a shared commitment to bringing elite sports infrastructure to the South.
The project's progress is a direct result of a partnership between the PSC and UP Mindanao. This public-academic collaboration is designed to decentralize sports development away from Metro Manila. It aims to provide local athletes with direct access to facilities that were previously only available in the capital region.
Building an International-Standard Facility
The centerpiece of the complex is a 50-meter by 25-meter Olympic-sized main competition pool. A 25-meter by 10-meter warm-up pool is now structurally complete and ready for water filling. Plans also include a 20-foot-deep diving pool, further expanding the facility's capabilities.
Crucially, the facility is being built to meet FINA (World Aquatics) standards. This certification would make it only the second FINA-certified aquatic venue in the Philippines. The inclusion of advanced filtration systems and retractable bleachers demonstrates a commitment to hosting major competitions.
A Future Hub for Champions
The aquatic center is situated on a 20-hectare property within the UP Mindanao campus. Its strategic location transforms a portion of the university land into a regional sports hub. This allows for the integration of academic programs, particularly for students in the Department of Human Kinetics.
The facility is envisioned as a catalyst for the "Grassroots to Gold" initiative. By giving Mindanaoan swimmers access to a top-tier venue, it aims to unlock hidden talent and produce future champions. The center will enable Davao City to host regional and national sporting events, boosting local tourism and pride.

The project's roots trace back to a 2015 land donation, made possible by former Davao Congressman Isidro Ungab and former PSC Chairman William Ramirez. Their early advocacy laid the foundation for what is now becoming a reality. The current PSC leadership continues to drive the project forward, transforming vision into concrete progress.
