DAVAO — The City Government of Tagum, through the Tagum City Youth and Sports Development Office, formally opened the Sports Ta Uy Inter-School Competition and Tagum City Athletic Association Meet on September 10, 2026. The event at the New City Hall Atrium launched a new season of inter-school sports under the theme "Harmonizing Sports, Excellence in Action, Uniting Young Athletes, Building Champions."
A Grand Opening for Young Athletes
The ceremony gathered city councilors, Department of Education officials, coaches, and sports stakeholders alongside athletes from elementary and secondary schools across the city. Their presence highlighted the shared commitment of the local government, education sector, and sports community to expanding opportunities for young Tagumenyos through athletics.
Schools Division Superintendent Alona C. Uy officially declared the games open. Regional Director Maria Ines C. Asuncion, represented by Warlito E. Hua, delivered a message emphasizing that sports go beyond winning medals. She said the competition is about building character, discipline, and pride in representing one's school.
A Parade of School Spirit
Four elementary clusters led the parade: Tagum Central, Tagum North, Tagum South, and TCAP. Six secondary units followed, each raising their school banners and delivering spirited cheers and yells. The presentations filled the venue with energy and reflected the unity and determination of every delegation.
Athletes and officials then took their oath of sportsmanship, led by Antonia Elizabeth Lantaya and Marciano G. Canillas. The Friendship Cauldron was also lit by representatives from the schools. The program concluded with a community dance from the Tagum City National Comprehensive High School Kadayawan Dance Guild.
Cheerdance Takes Center Stage
Following the opening, the energy soared as participating schools competed in the Cheerdance Competition. Each team electrified the venue with powerful routines, precise formations, and spirited performances. Behind every movement was the discipline, teamwork, and determination of student-athletes competing for the top spot.
Three teams advanced as the Top 3: La Filipina National High School, Tagum National Trade School, and Tagum City National High School. Their standout performances earned them a place among the competition's best. The suspense continues as the final rankings, including the Cheerdance Champion, will be revealed during the Awarding Ceremony on September 13, 2026.
Building Champions Beyond the Games
Mayor Rey T. Uy, represented by Hon. Ciara Isabelle Uy-Salazar, shared that the athletes were already winners before entering the Atrium. He said representing one's family and community is a great honor. Plans for future inter-college and inter-NGO competitions were also announced.
Beyond medals, the competition aims to cultivate discipline, teamwork, perseverance, respect, and sportsmanship. It provides a safe and inclusive platform for participants to strengthen their skills and prepare for regional, national, and international opportunities.
