DAVAO CITY — Eight-year-old golf sensation Zoey Behati Ruiz Mascariñas is set to represent the Philippines in three of the world's most prestigious junior golf tournaments this year. The Grade 2 learner from Abbas Orchard School has qualified for competitions in San Diego, Florida, and Pinehurst, North Carolina.
A Family Bond Through Golf
Zoey's journey into golf began as a simple family bonding activity. Her father, businessman Rene Antonio "Jipjip" Mascariñas, introduced her to the sport when she was just five years old. The decision came after her mother, Sharon, encouraged a shared activity between father and daughter.
Jipjip chose golf deliberately, recognizing the character-building nature of the sport. He explained that golf teaches humility and resilience because players lose more often than they win. The goal was to raise a grounded, resilient child who finds joy in the game itself.
Remarkable Achievements at a Young Age
Zoey's list of accomplishments is extraordinary for her age. She placed 15th in the 2025 US Kids Golf World Championship, earning a gold medallion among 64 global competitors. She also secured third place in the 2025 US Kids New Zealand Championship.
Her winning streak continued with a championship at the US Kids Local Tour Philippines 2025 and another top finish in Singapore. Most recently, Zoey claimed the Champion title at the 2026 Philippine Open Championships and a Top 5 finish at the Under Armour Junior World Golf Tournament.
Upcoming Challenges on the World Stage
This year, Zoey will compete in the 2026 USWING MOJING Junior World Golf Championship in San Diego. She will also join the Under Armor Junior World Golf Championship in Florida. The final stop is the US Kids Golf World Championship at the fabled Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina.
The Pinehurst tournament holds special significance, as it represents her second appearance at the prestigious event. In 2026, the competition will feature representatives from 62 countries, up from 50 in 2025. Zoey will face the best young golfers from around the globe.
Values Beyond the Course
Despite her busy schedule, Zoey maintains a balanced childhood. She enjoys playing piano, creating arts and crafts, and exploring hip-hop dancing and gymnastics. Her parents ensure she spends quality time with classmates and cousins.
Jipjip expressed pride not just in his daughter's trophies but in the person she is becoming. He hopes she continues to find joy in her passions and grows into a kind, humble, and resilient individual. The young golfer's story inspires other children to pursue excellence while staying grounded.
