DAVAO CITY — The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) XI is making significant strides in empowering the region's youth through the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES). As of the latest data, 6,230 young Davaoeños have been placed in temporary employment opportunities, gaining valuable work experience while supporting their education and family needs.
A Pathway to Dignified Work
The SPES program is designed to help students and out-of-school youth transition into the workforce. It provides them with short-term jobs in government offices, private establishments, and service-oriented businesses. This early exposure helps them develop essential skills and discipline.
Beyond the immediate income, the program instills a sense of responsibility and confidence. DOLE XI Regional Director Atty. Dax B. Villaruel emphasized that SPES is more than just a job. "It is also a way for our young people to experience the dignity of work, develop discipline and responsibility, and gain confidence in their own capabilities," he said.
Breaking Down the Numbers
The 6,230 beneficiaries come from diverse backgrounds. The majority, 5,799, are students—309 from Junior High School, 2,157 from Senior High School, 3,317 from college, and 16 from technical-vocational programs. Additionally, 431 out-of-school youth were given opportunities to earn and learn.
The program also extended its reach to 2,156 graduates of Senior High School, College, and Technical-Vocational programs. These graduates gained valuable work experience, strengthening their readiness for full-time employment. This comprehensive approach addresses the needs of various youth segments.
A Story of Transformation
For beneficiaries like Raquel, SPES was a lifeline. As an out-of-school youth, she struggled to find stable employment to support her family. "Before ko nahimong SPES, naglisod jud kog pangitag trabaho para maka-sustento sa akong pamilya," she shared.
Through SPES, Raquel found an opportunity to enter the workforce and develop skills in the medical field. "Dako kaayo ang natabang sa SPES program sa akong kinabuhi tungod kay kini ang naghatag sa akoa ug oportunidad nga makatrabaho," she said. Her story illustrates the program's power to change lives.
Celebrating Youth Potential
The program's impact extends beyond job placement. The Provincial Grand SPES Day 2026 in Davao del Norte showcased the talents and creativity of these young workers. The event served as a celebration of what the youth can achieve when given the right opportunities.
