DAVAO — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is on track to complete the ₱83‑million Dacudao Avenue Storm Drainage Project by August 2026, promising to end chronic street flooding along one of the city’s key thoroughfares. The upgrade is already being viewed as a catalyst for real estate growth in the area.
A Flood‑Free Future for Dacudao Avenue
For years, heavy rains transformed Dacudao Avenue into a waterlogged corridor, testing the patience of commuters and the resilience of nearby businesses. The new drainage system, consisting of massive double‑barrel reinforced concrete box culverts, is engineered to swallow stormwater that once pooled on the road. A dry, passable street during monsoon season directly lifts the desirability of adjacent residential and commercial properties.
DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon inspected the site on July 29, 2026 and expressed confidence that the project will meet its timeline. He noted the sheer scale of the infrastructure, with each barrel measuring three meters wide, designed to carry immense water volume. The project also includes cleaning 200 linear meters of existing lateral drains to restore full system function.
Engineering a Long‑Term Solution
The technical scope covers 290 linear meters of double‑barrel culverts and an additional 110 linear meters of slightly smaller barrels, all buried beneath the avenue. This under‑road storage capacity is part of a larger vision aligned with the JICA Master Plan for Davao City, which calls for 38,000 cubic meters of stormwater storage along this corridor. Once complete, the project will deliver over 8,000 cubic meters, representing a significant first installment of a broader flood mitigation network.
Secretary Dizon emphasized that the current work covers only one lane, with plans to replicate the system on the opposite side. The government aims to extend the drainage infrastructure until the entire length of Dacudao Avenue is protected. For property owners and developers, this signals a long‑term commitment to reducing flood risk, making the corridor a safer bet for investment.
